Watch: New Zealand leave for T20 WC, child stars Angus, Matilda bid them special goodbye

Child stars Angus and Matilda bid the New Zealand team a special goodbye for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and the United States of America (USA). Last month, the kids announced the Black Caps squad after the New Zealand board chipped in with something unique. They were present at the airport when the Kiwis were about to depart.

Angus and Matilda also interviewed a few of the cricketers. Daryl Mitchell appreciated them for the way they named the national squad for the multi-nation mega event.

“You guys did well with the announcement,” Mitchell said.

“Good job on making the team,” Matilda replied.

‘Can we come with you?’

The kids also had a fun conversation with New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, asking him to take them along with the team.

“What movies are you going to watch in the flight,” Angus asked the New Zealand skipper to which Williamson replied ‘Dune’, a popular American science fiction film.

“Can you sneak us onto the plane in one of your bags? Can we come with you?” Angus and Matilda said. Williamson replied in the affirmative, although jokingly.

Later, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra also had a chat with them before the team went to catch their flight.

Back in 2021, New Zealand got close to winning the T20 World Cup, but lost to Aaron Finch’s Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Last time, they made their way through to the semi-final before losing to Babar Azam’s Pakistan.

The Kiwis are scheduled to start their campaign on Friday, June 7 against Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Like some of the other teams, New Zealand would not play any warm-up matches.

Recently, the Black Caps drew their T20I series against Pakistan 2-2, although most of their players from their current squad were unavailable.
