French Open: Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff ease into 3rd round with straight sets win

World No.2 Jannik Sinner made light work of Richard Gasquet and advanced to the third round of the French Open 2024. The Italian won the second-round match against the home favourite 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday, May 29 on Court Philippe-Chatrier. It took Sinner 2 hours and 14 minutes to ease past the Frenchman.

In the first 2 sets, Sinner looked in cruise control, but seemed to have struggled with his hip in the final set. Gasquet made him work hard as the reigning Australian Open champion was seen walking gingerly in between points. However, he held his nerves to finish the match off clinically. The odds were always against Gasquet, who had never beaten a top 2 opponent in a Grand Slam.

With rain leading to cancellations on the other courts, there was no delay in Sinner’s match thanks to the roof on Centre Court. Sinner is now four wins away from becoming the No.1 player for the first time in his career. He will next be up against Pavel Kotov, who defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5).

Coco Gauff beats Tamara Zidansek

USA’s Coco Gauff also made her way through to the third round of the women’s singles. She defeated Tamara Zidansek 6-3, 6-4 and advanced to Round 3 at Roland Garros for the fourth year in a row. Gauff took an hour and 31 minutes to come up trumps in her match.

Gauff had her fair share of troubles in the match. In the first set, Gauff conceded a break and went 1-2 down after which she made a comeback. In the second set, Gauff took a 4-2 lead, but Zidansek stormed back to make it 4-4. However, she earned a crucial break of serve to move into the Round of 32.
